Portable Madness Mix #9 2009-08-08

Posted in Experimental on August 9, 2009 by ajc

Another mix for your enjoyment – did two radio shows live since the last one, and then went on vacation, so it’s been a while.

This one has more of an angular improvisational kinda feel, particularly as we get into the second half hour.  Some funky stuff at the beginning, particularly the Chicken Curry track, before we veer off into some world music pastiche from 23 Skidoo and John Lurie from the must-rent Fishing with John series.

The Marclay track give a foreshadowing of what’s to come later, before things go Latin with Yello and mambo king Perez Prado.    Gets pretty noisy with Nick Didkovsky and Bill Frisell, before gradually winding down with more of a chillout track from the Solid Doctor.

Will be on the air Tuesday 7/7, over at www.wcuw.org, at 8:00 PM ET.

Filling in on a program called Under The Influence – the time slot that time of night is usually reserved for a “rock” show, but that definition may stretch a bit.

If you like some of the stuff posted here, tune in and stream it live…

Portable Madness Mix #8 2009-06-21

Posted in Experimental on June 22, 2009 by ajc

A vague air/space theme to start things off this time – lotsa dub effects from Ras Mesinai, the incomparably deranged rap of Kool Keith, a classic wave single from Thomas Leer, beatz from Komet, and 70’s synth fuckery from Ralph Lundsten.  The Mercury Program return to Earth and contribute a song very much in the vein of Tortoise…

A bit later, things get a little silly with The Moog Cookbook and Esquivel, before veering off into some neo-cool jazz from Flanger and Sand.

The Krautrockers finish it off, with a great trance track from ex-Can singer Damo Suzuki, before finishing with a bluesy track from the recently departed Guru Guru frontman Uli Trepte.

00:00 01 Ras Mesinai – The Reanimator 1.0
06:17 02 Kool Keith – Rockets on the Battlefield
10:27 03 Thomas Leer – Private Plane

Added streaming capabilities

Posted in Experimental on May 31, 2009 by ajc

I’ve found a cool service that allows realtime streaming of these mixes, without worrying about online storage or hosting or any of that stuff.

It can be found at www.orb.com, if you’d like to set up your own streaming of your music collection.    The seven mixes to date that are linked on this blog can be streamed at the links below.  You may still download any of the Rapidshare links in the posts themselves.

Mitch and I will be back on WCUW this Tuesday 6/2 at 8 PM Eastern time – tune in and catch the stream!

Portable Madness Mix #6 2009-04-26

Posted in Experimental on April 26, 2009 by ajc

An eclectic mix this time, with some neo-lounge from Tipsy, the always stalwart big beat of DJ Krush, and those indie Maine-iacs Cerberus Shoal kicking things off.

The mosquito sound is actually from Picchio dal Pozzo, not Tortoise,  despite the track names and the segue.  We then hear rowdy Belgian big band X-Legged Sally before things get bassy and wavish for a bit with the Ubus, Magazine, and Section 25.

The Matthew Herbert Big Band is a recent fave – heavily monkeyed-with avant showtunes – if you can imagine.  Exotic blues from a Morricone soundtrack and the ethereal beats of Loop Guru close it out.

Had fun last week live on the radio – more to come in May and June, I think…

00:00 01 Tipsy – Liquordelic
03:56 02 DJ Krush – Distant Voices

Portable Madness Mix #5 2009-04-12

Posted in Experimental on April 12, 2009 by ajc

This week’s ‘cast starts off with oddball hipster dufii Bruce Hampton and Fred Lane, before getting into a mix that sprinkles in some downtempo, a bit of Krautrock, wave from Lizzy Descloux and Stereolab, and a healthy dose of dub at the end, sandwiching Jah Wobble  and the Dub Syndicate around some neodub from the likes of Pole and another Disrupt associate on Jahtari, Ras Amerlock.

I will be back on streaming radio next week, hopefully along with Mitch, Jim, and Michael, over at WCUW-FM.  Check it out – I don’t think it’s archived, but streams live between 10 and 12 PM EST (GMT-5).  Should be fun to do this sort of thing live.

Very rhythmic this week – download links below…

Portable Madness Mix #4 2009-03-29

Posted in Experimental on March 29, 2009 by ajc

This week’s mix pulls together a bunch of my favorite new wave/minimal 80’s kinda things, plus a few newer things sprinkled in.

Lotsa great grrlpunk here, with the Bush Tetras, Delta 5 (who finally got a CD reissue recently), Au Pairs, and the always massive Slits with their seminal track Typical Girls.

The second half gets synthy, with Chicks on Speed providing a modern take on the genre.  The overlooked Pink Industry (who have caught on since at collector’s prices!) chime in, and then the Hudsons, John Bender (a fan compilation CD of which is here), and the even more obscure Two explore the minimal synth genre.

More modern stuff at the end, including Disrupt, one of my favorite current dub artists.  I anticipate including more dub in future mixes – I’ve always been into the On-U Sound spectrum, and there are some nice modern takes on that whole thing around these days…

Might be back on the radio soon, with old friends – watch this space…

Portable Madness Mix #3 2009-03-22

Posted in Experimental on March 22, 2009 by ajc

Here’s a new mix, after an hiatus of a few weeks.  This one has a more exotic, world music kinda feel, especially towards the middle.

After an atmospheric drum’n’bass interlude by Squarepusher, Annette Peacock  gets very sultry, before things veer off into an Ambiances Magnetiques/ReR vein for a bit.  Nice worldvibe stuff from Eh Masak and Jah Wobble, before Amon Tobin segues into more of a fourth world area courtesy of Jon Hassell and Brian Eno and David Toop.  Lastly, a few loopy new wavish tracks from David Thomas, Danielle Dax, and that anchor of the 80’s compilation the Young Marble Giants to close it out.

Track list:

00:00 01 Squarepusher – Port Rhombus
06:33 02 Annette Peacock – My Mama Never Taught Me How to Cook
11:54 03 Virgule IV – Trahi Ton Secret
15:37 04 Stefano Delu – Pensa un Numero

Portable Madness Mix #2 2009-03-01

Posted in Experimental on March 1, 2009 by ajc

Here’s another mix of about an hour – kind of a late night feel to a lot of this one, at least for me (although DJ Food is pretty hyper, and the ‘Godfather of go-go’  Chuck Brown and ‘Blood’ Ulmer do make a racket towards the end.   I recently discovered the Norwegian band Wibutee, who contribute a great moody slice of jazz crossed with electronica in ‘Newborn Thing.’  Also a couple of classic early wave/DIY tracks here by the Raincoats and Vivien Goldman.

Track list:

00:00 01 The Raincoats – Shouting Out Loud
04:50 02 Vivien Goldman – Launderette
08:31 03 Portishead – Nylon Smile
